Our top ten easily overlooked must-dos when moving home

by Luke Betts

Moving home can go one of two ways: Enjoyable or Stressful

It should be an unforgettable moment in life, but often for the wrong reasons. It’s not difficult to get lost in a sea of finances, interior design and school catchments areas - forgetting the simple jobs that can transform your moving experience.

Contacting your utility providers, local council and all of your other suppliers to tell them you’re moving has always been painstaking, luckily that’s exactly what we offer as a free service. (We couldn’t include ourselves in the list!)

Another special mention not in the top ten is to measure doors widths and note any tight areas in the new property, eliminating the possibility that your brand new sofa set won’t fit through the front door.

So you’re finally ready to head onto/up that property ladder, take our top ten with you:

1.       Ensure your removal company are licensed & insured – Are they members of the Removal Trade Association? Trusting all of your worldly possessions to a company is a big step, make sure you’re covered.

2.       Create a moving file of all related receipts & invoices – This will help keep tabs on who has been paid, also for tax reclamation purposes.

3.       Gather all important documents & store together – Include documents from all dependants. Misplacing a passport or rental agreement can be a nightmare.

4.       Make arrangements with a new GP, Dentist & Vet (if necessary) – Life comes at you fast, having this sorted before you move is a big weight lifted.

5.       Label boxes correctly - Mark them with what room they’re going into plus give them a number e.g. Lounge – 3 of 12. Everything’s in the right room from the start whilst ensuring no boxes mysteriously disappear.

6.       Run down your perishable food stock in time with your move date to minimise food waste – Lots of food can be simply packed, however if you’re heading a distance it’s best not to have your eggs and last night’s leftovers in the car with you.

7.       Unplug your fridges & freezers to defrost the night before moving – Make sure you lay an old towel in front when you do this! The classic move: Switching the fridge freezer off and putting it in the removal van first, letting it melt over every piece of furniture you own.

8.       Identify future local business you will require – People often don’t realise how much their gardeners or cleaners really do until they don’t have them around anymore, seek reviews and local insight.

9.       Pack an “essentials” bag/box for your first day in your new home – Moving day can be full of pitfalls, be ready for them. A change of clothes, toiletries, battery pack, torch or other items which you deem useful.

10.   Take photos of any electronics with lots of wires – So much easier to reconnect in your new home. Whilst you may think you remember how the back of the TV unit fits together, it’s a pain if you forget.

Our aim is to change the face of moving home, to bring back the sheer excitement of moving forward even in such uncertain times. Following these must-dos will keep you on track for the enjoyable move everyone deserves.
